No matter what size your house may be, there are some essential items you need to be able to call it a home. I’ve put together the definitive list of furniture must-haves for you right here!
Sofa – Every home needs a comfy sofa to relax on. You might like a recliner or something stylish like a chaise-lounge. Look for seating that suits your character and personality. Often, colours can be quite drab, but there are some beautiful fabrics available now offering more vibrant colours. You can even choose some stylish patterns like stripes.
Bed – When it comes to resting your weary head, you want a bed that is super comfortable. I just love the idea of a four-poster bed made of a deep, rich coloured wood. Wooden frames are practical and on trend for this coming season, though. Chunky oak bed frames have been desirable for a while now. Don’t forget to order your mattress. Something supporting and cosy would be ideal.
Dining Table – You never know who may make an impromptu visit. You can dine in style, seated around a gorgeous wooden dining table. Curved back chairs are becoming very trendy. I love the shape. It’s like they’re sculpted. You can easily dress them up with fabric garnishes. Seating for six is usually adequate. An extending table helps you maximise your space.
Coffee Table – Coffee tables actually offer far more than a handy surface. They can become the key focus of your living room. If you look at some of the tables available from Ian Snow Furniture, you’ll be amazed at the variety available to suit your personality or styling. With so many styles in wood, you can create a focus piece in your room that offers all the character you need.
Arm Chairs – It’s always nice to have a cosy armchair in your living room. Often, you can find a decorative armchair to add a splash of colour to the room. They also help to provide structure and shape to a room. An arm chair can be angled to break up a square room, or popped in the corner under a reading lamp as a quiet getaway. Arm chairs are small enough that you can change their colour or design with a simple throw each season.

Chest of Drawers – When it comes to picking out a chest of drawers, you need to be sure it serves its purpose as well as fitting into its new home. Drawers for clothing need to be deeper. A bedside chest of drawers may be smaller for holding your personal items or books. Matching sets always look good together in a stylish bedroom. But an eclectic collection of furniture can also be very attractive. Drawer stacks can also be handy in a utility space, or even a bathroom for storing all those bits and pieces.
Bedside Stand – This may be a chest of drawers, or just a small table to perch your lamp on. They help to add shape to the room as well as being very functional. If you have a lamp, situate your bedside stand near to a power point so you can plug it in. This may also determine the position on the bed. Make sure you can still open the wardrobe doors! Some people like to buy units that hover over the bed. This provides extra lighting from above, and a few storage cupboards too.
Wardrobe – There was a trend not long ago to use open railings or even fabric wardrobes. These things aren’t quite as popular these days. Instead, fitted units with storage options inside have become the norm. This provides smart ways to organise your clothes, shoes and personal items. Sliding door designs are ideal in tight spaces as well. If you’re buying free-standing furniture, be sure it fits the space. They are very big and difficult to move.

Dressing Table – Having somewhere to sit and apply make-up, or even remove it, is ideal in the bedroom. You may need a separate table-top mirror and bench. Position your dressing table near natural light. You might also want a vanity light on top of the table. For something light and elegant, a simple table could be ideal. For extra storage, a full dressing table should have deep drawers or cupboards either side. You may even have a small vanity drawer across the top.
Sideboard – A sideboard is so handy. You might position it in the dining room to store all your cutlery and plates. Or it might be in the living room to hold all your books and DVDs. A kitchen is a great place for a sideboard too. You could use it to store typical kitchen items or just somewhere to store receipts and bills.
