Heard of hygge? Well if you’re a fan of following home décor trends you’ll almost certainly have come across this term on your fave lifestyle blogs. I love it and I’ve read a few books on the Scandi art!
Quite simply, it’s the art of being cosy. It means, lots of blankets, cushions and natural looking style. Think wood, pottery and stoneware interiors.
1. Warmth and luxury
If you’re looking to add a little bit of luxury and softness to your home, then you should take a look at some of the hygge principles. The great news is that it doesn’t demand a great outlay and can be worked into your existing décor easily.
If you already have an open fire in your home, then you’re halfway there in any case. You just need to figure out how to build a proper fire for cosy nights in. Don’t worry though, dry kindling makes it easy and there are plenty of YouTube tutorials pointing the way. You’ll be snuggled up in front of the roaring flames in no time.
2. Style your home
The great thing about this design concept is that it is all about you being warm, cosy, comfortable and fully relaxed. The whole philosophy centres around the idea of making your living room a sanctuary against the cold outside. Even when it’s not particularly cold out, stretching out surrounded by cool wood is equally as relaxing.
So how do you go about getting this style? Start with the basics. Look at your walls and colours, are they too busy? Is the brightness of your living room enough to give you a migraine? Think stripped back and relaxed; an acoustic version of the eclectic mix you have at the moment.
3. Furniture
Give away or sell that plastic, metal or glass coffee table and trawl the second hand shops or Freecycle for a wooden table that brings its own warmth and personality to the room. Do the same with shelves, opting for stripped down scaffolding boards over plastic or highly glossed versions.
4. Flooring
Then you can turn your attention to your floors. If your carpet has seen better days anyway, have you had a look underneath? You might find that your floorboards are in decent condition and with a little TLC could be brought up to a good standard. Be brave and take a peek underneath that underlay.
Either way you can cover up the worst of your carpets with giant rugs or throws that might also go over your sofa.
Enjoy an afternoon walking around second hand and antique furniture shops snapping up little bargains that will give your home that beautiful hygge touch.
Think rustic but not unfinished and stamp your individual style on the place you spend most of your time. You won’t regret shaking up your style and finding your inner Danish designer. Get cosy, get comfortable and get hygge.
