186 hours in Dubrovnik

What can I say about Dubrovnik? It is gorgeous and it will always have a place in my heart of course, because we got engaged there but overall it is such a romantic city and there’s so much to see and do. Here are my top five things to do in Dubrovnik, Croatia. We stayed for a week because it was part summer holiday and part city break for us as we hadn’t had a ‘holiday’ for about 18 months due to buying our house but I would say that you could easily see everything Dubrovnik has to offer in around 3 to 4 days if you packed it all in!

We were pretty chilled and made the most of our sunny days and afternoons with our hotel’s pool but as I said, you could easily do everything in 3-4 days if you were choosing Dubrovnik as a city break location. The Old Town is around 25 minutes from the airport so there isn’t a huge transfer once you land which is fantastic as you can get stuck straight into your holiday.

We travelled with Jet2 on a package holiday and we couldn’t recommend it enough. It was very easy to book, pay off and we added extras such as a private transfer which was so easy to sort out once you land. There’s staff waiting for you to direct you to where you need to go and I’d definitely fly Jet2 again and trust them with my holiday. Let’s get into the things to do!

1. Explore the Old Town

There’s so much to see and do and explore in the Old Town from drinking coffee to eating pizza and just chilling and people watching! We loved to explore all the little shops and backstreets and there’s some lovely little museums and historical things to see within the town too.

2. Walk the City Walls

Of course, this is a must-do when you visit Dubrovnik and it was awesome. We did it on a fairly overcast day which was nice as it was warm enough to be in our holiday clothes but we weren’t sweating and getting too hot! The views are incredible and it’s so cool to walk all the way around the city and peer into it seeing all the sights. Our tour guide from our GoT tour actually gave us vouchers for 50 kuna off the price of our tickets so this was great so perhaps if you’re planning to do both, do your GoT tour first as this doesn’t take you around the walls at all so you’re not spoiling it for yourselves or anything.

3. Take the ferry to Lokrum and/or the Cable Car to the viewing point

For a lovely day trip away from the Old Town you can get a 10-15 minute ferry over to Lokrum which is a bit of a sanctuary and has some amazing rocks, beaches and it’s right by the sea so you can snorkel, sunbathe and generally explore. We took some lunch with us but there is some lovely cafes and bars on the island already. It’s packed with peacocks and rabbits which are super cute!

The ferry was 150 kuna each when we travelled which is around £18 and is very, very expensive for a 20 minute round trip but it is a ferry and it is a lovely island but I just thought I would flag this because it’s so pricey! We only went over because we had so much time in Dubrovnik and Lokrum is nice but I wouldn’t say it’s a must-see. It didn’t make our trip and we could have easily had an amazing time without doing this.

Where as, the Cable Car up to the top of the mountains was awesome. This is around the same price as the ferry to Lokrum and it’s so much more worth it if you can deal with the heights. The Cable Car itself is really quick but the views from the top are amazing and there’s a gorgeous restaurant at the top which is lovely for a drink and lunch. This was my preferred activity out of the two.

4. Eat by the harbour

As I said above, Dubrovnik is such a romantic place as there are so many gorgeous places to eat and drink in the evening. Check out my Dubrovnik Food Diary for some of my favourite restaurants but it really is such a lovely experience to eat out in the evening right next to the water. There are lots of restaurants around the harbour but two of our favourites were Poklisar and Arsenal which you can read about in that post linked above.

5. Do a Game of Thrones tour

There are plenty of different companies running tours in Dubrovnik as of course, it was one of the main filming locations for King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. We went with this one and chose the two hour tour. I’m not a huge GoT fan, I’ve seen a couple of episodes but I really enjoyed it even though I didn’t really know the ins and outs of specific scenes! The tour guide was so, so knowledgable and he was really funny and friendly. It’s a good walk around for a couple of hours but it isn’t too tiring as it’s quite relaxed but of course, wear comfy shoes and take water with you. We had the chance to see some of the replica weapons and other cool stuff from the series and I think Luke, the super fan, really enjoyed it and that was the main thing!
