Planning a Winter Wedding: 4 Mistakes to Avoid

A winter wedding can be just as beautiful as a wedding at any other time of year. We’re planning to get married in the winter, obviously it’s next year now but that just gives us more time to chill. A lot of people would say ‘more time to plan’ but we literally have hardly any planning to do! It’ll probably creep up on us next year but we’re staying chilled for now.

Sometimes getting married in the winter can cost less than a summer wedding, it definitely did for us and our venue, but it can still be super beautiful. But, of course, getting married in the winter poses its own challenges. It’s cold and potentially wet, with a chance of snow, hail, or other wintry weathers occurring too and we have no idea what might happen! I remember a day in November 2019 when it was around 16 degrees so I’m holding out for that kind of freak weather personally… You can definitely plan a wonderful winter wedding, but there are some mistakes you will probably want to avoid – check them out…

1. Assuming Your Guests Will Be Prepared for Winter

Whether you’re getting married indoors or outdoors, it can be chilly in the winter. Even if you warn your guests that they might want to wear a coat and keep themselves warm, they won’t necessarily heed your advice. But you don’t want your guests to be shivering through your ceremony or reception, so considering offering them a few ways to keep warm. You might have some extra heaters, some blankets that they can use, hand warmers, or even hot toddies or mulled wine for everyone to sip on.

2. Separate Ceremony and Reception Venues

Sometimes separate venues for the ceremony and reception won’t pose a problem. A short trip and everyone will soon be ready to party. But during the winter, you might not want to risk it. It can mean more standing around outside, and potentially even people trying to drive on icy or snowy roads. Instead, consider looking at wedding venues that are licensed for ceremonies, as well as offering receptions. Not only is it more convenient for your guests, but it’s better for you too. There’s less stress when you don’t need to worry about everyone making it to the reception venue. We’re just heading over the road from our ceremony to our venue so fingers crossed no-one gets blown away in the 1 minute walk…

3. No Backup Plan If Getting Married Outdoors

Getting married during the winter doesn’t have to mean an indoor wedding. However, there is always a chance that the weather won’t be appropriate and that having your ceremony outside won’t work for you. Fortunately, this issue can often be solved easily. In the UK, you can get married outdoors, but it must be under a permanent structure with a roof, such as a gazebo. This means that many options for getting married outdoors are part of larger venues, which can also offer you an indoor ceremony location if necessary. You might be able to arrange this as a backup plan with your venue.

4. Forgetting About Wedding Insurance

Wedding insurance is always useful, but it could be even more so during the winter. When the weather is ready to disrupt any of the things that you have planned, your insurance could help you. We know from this year that the strangest things can disrupt our lives, don’t we? If your photographer doesn’t turn up because of a freak snowstorm, your insurance might be able to help you out, so you’re not out of pocket.

If you want to have a magical winter wedding, avoid making these top mistakes, and everything will run smoothly.
