As a student-marketer and previous student myself not so long ago, I’ve got a few handy hints and tips for saving money when money is super tight!
- Student Discount
Obviously this is my first and slightly biased approach. Sign up to UNiDAYS for free with your uni email address and benefit from loads and loads of amazing offers on food, fitness and fashion! - Voucher Codes
Sign up for free voucher sites such as Vouchercloud and take advantage of things like O2 Priority as you can grab lunch for £1 on most Mondays! Save the student is also a cool site which hunts down a lot of printable vouchers and freebies for food and the like. Dealsland UK is also a great place to grab vouchers for places like Missguided. - Budgetting
First and foremost, you need to know exactly how much money you need to keep you going every week or month. Write down all your monthly incomings and outgoings and see how much you have left over (if anything) for your own shopping/socialising. This will make sure you know not to overspend and you can see if you need to get a part time job or not! - Bulk Everything
By everything, I mean buy bigger shampoo bottles as they’ll usually be cheaper and last longer, cook more food and freeze portions. Bigger bags of pasta and rice are always bette value, try to not shop day-to-day at convenience stores because these will definitely be more expensive. Do a weekly big shop and you can always do small top up shops for things like milk! - Make Money
I’d always recommend getting a part time job anyway if you can, even if it’s just at home for when you go back for the holidays. I had a job at home that I went home to and just bulked up on hours during the holidays as well as being a student ambassador and regularly selling and re-selling my wardrobe on eBay! Blogging is also a great little earner if you’re established enough for people to pay for advertising or guest posts. Plus you can get some great freebies which may mean you won’t have to buy as much stuff!
