5 Lockdown Money-Saving Tips

Nobody quite knows which direction the economy is going to go in response to the lockdown. For some, this is just a temporary blip, and our lives will return to normal soon. For others, we’re looking at huge financial change. So, lots of us want to save money to keep our family finances in good shape over the following months and years. You can read my lockdown money diary here if you’re interested in what I spent and saved recently. So, what practical steps can you take to save money? Here are a few tips and you can read more of my money tips and check out my budgeting spreadsheet here.

1. Unsubscribe

Many of us are members of gyms, clubs and societies that can’t meet right now. In regular times, these services provide exceptional value. But if you can’t attend, what’s the use? It’s just money down the drain. Most gyms will have postponed memberships but double check and see if you can backdate anything. Unless you are a member of a charity, you might want to pull the plug on your subscription and or ask for a refund if you pay annually.

2. Become a coupon queen (or king!)

There’s always a way to get some money off, whether it’s signing up to a newsletter or using someone’s referral code. We’ve seen all sorts of brands trying to entice customers through extensive use of couponing. With a Wallis promo code, you can get money off things like clothes and shoes. And with codes from the likes of Next and H&M, there are even more opportunities to save. It’s not just clothes, though. You can use promo codes, coupons and discounts to get money off pretty much anything online, especially if you’re willing to wait for the sales. I love a save on sale!

3. Refunds

The government isn’t allowing large crowds to gather, so sporting events that aren’t behind closed doors are currently on hold. For those of you with season tickets, this is a big problem. You paid a lot of money for the ability to go and watch matches live, but you’re no longer able to go. Some clubs, however, are offering season ticket holders refunds or money off next year’s pass. Others are offering outright cashback. Usually, you’ll get a deal if you choose non-cash restitution, such as a free pass next year, or free games in 2022 or beyond. Check out your options.

4. Free grocery delivery

Some people have been told to shield at home to prevent infection with the virus. Many of these people might be entitled to free food delivery which is nice perk to a crappy situation.

5. Are you eligible for food vouchers?

Finally, some families can get vouchers instead of free school meals to put towards their shopping. This benefit-in-kind helps to reduce your weekly grocery store bill if you have kids.
