How to Plan Trip Of A Lifetime Honeymoon

As you probably know, we’re wedding planning and planning a honeymoon is something that I thought we’d spend most of this year doing. We’ve had to postpone our wedding and therefore have also obviously postponed the honeymoon that we hadn’t even booked yet! We were planning a Scottish highlands trip if we were actually getting married but this has been scuppered too so it’s all planning hands on deck for next year (hopefully!). Here are a few of my tips on where to start when choosing somewhere for your honeymoon.

1. Choose your location
I love our holidays, trips away and seeing new places.  We headed to Dubrovnik where we got engaged last year which was absolutely amazing and not somewhere that was really on our list before but we absolutely loved it. For our honeymoon there were lots of options on the table, and there still are lots of options on the table for whenever we get around to it!

The easiest way to decide on your personal honeymoon destination is think back to your previous holidays and think about what your favourite things to do were. Don’t just jet off too the Maldives because that’s a classic ‘honeymoon’ location if you’re not a fan of lying on the beach all day. We love to be active, explore, hike, eat the local food, see culture, learn and relax on our holidays. We don’t just like one thing when we’re away so somewhere with a bit of everything is perfect for us. We love to mix a city break with nature and relaxation so Canada could be a really good place for us. If we’re ever able to take flights to Canada from the UK again (of course I know we will but it seems like such a pipe dream at the moment doesn’t it?)

There’s the cities of Quebec, Montreal and Toronto to explore as we love a city break plus there’s hikes to do, amazing lakes to see, animals to spot and amazing landscape to see as well as eating poutine and other amazing Canadian treats.

2. Write your itinerary

Once you’ve decided on your location and you’ve got your flights booked it’s time to get planning what you’re going to do when you’re there. We like to move from a few places when we’re away if we’re going on holiday for longer than 3 days. So we’ll rent a car, we’ll fly across countries or into a new country and make sure we get the most out of the trip.

With this I love to write a little spreadsheet with timings of all the flights and travel for the whole holiday in and then pencil in activities that we want to do such as restaurants we want to eat at, tourist spots, relaxation, hikes, everything you want to do! I spend a LOT of time on Google Maps when I’m planning a holiday, unless I have a travel agent planning it for me, to make sure we’re not traipsing all over the place when we could have been to one museum that’s near another cafe we wanted in the same day. I hope that makes sense! Itineraries sound exhausting but it’s actually the best way to make sure you have planned in downtime to relax.

3. Plan your outfits

Obviously if you’re doing lots of different activities you’ll need a lot of outfits! Taking it back to Canada, I am loving the hiking vibe and if we do go, it will be November and ‘fall’ is apparently the best time to visit Canada because it’s so beautiful. It can also be really, really cold but sunny so it’s perfect for that crisp autumn/winter vibe. So, plenty of thermals, socks and sunglasses!

I’ve chosen a few beautiful pieces for this trip that are on my wishlist! These Toast Hiking Boots are amazing, they probably aren’t the most ‘functional’ but I think they are so lovely to look at. This Hollister Brushed Shirt Jacket is obviously not a perfect hiking jacket but it’s definitely more for travelling in the car, looking cute, taking pics and layering up underneath! I will always wear thermals, even in the UK in the winter so this John Lewis Thermal Top*  is a must have. I also spotted these Sweaty Betty Hiking Trousers which would be so great, I was really excited when I saw that Sweaty Betty had brought out hiking gear. Finally, topping everything off with a little sun protection with these Ray Ban sunglasses* and the essential Kiehls Ultra Facial SPF*.
