4 Ideas for future-proofing your home

AD – Collaboration with Handicare Stairlifts UK

After the year we’ve had I’m sure we’re all thinking differently about the future. Maybe we’re thinking about living with relatives that we wouldn’t before? Or even having older relatives move in when they’re ready to instead of moving into a care home if that’s possible for their situations. So, what are some clever additions that you can do to your home in the future to make it more accessible for family members over 60, or, even yourself in the future? Here are four ideas.

1. Lighting

Making sure your home is well lit is really important for safety and security so having things like motion-sensor lights installed could really keep you safe in your home. This applies to any age actually! We’ve just had some motion sensor lights added to our garage and driveway for security reasons and they have been so helpful and make us feel much safer. Having motion sensor lights for bathrooms or other places with potentially slippy floors could be a good idea too.

2. Cameras

Another security one, having cameras that are connected to iPads or smartphones can also be a great addition to your home if there is ever anyone at home alone. It’s especially helpful for all of us working from home on our own at the moment, just in case!

3. Moving around the home

Of course, taking the time to install stairlifts could be a necessity in the future so bear this in mind if you ever widen or narrow your staircase. There’s also the option to widen doorframes and change the direction that doors open too so bear these changes in mind if you come to live with a relative that needs a wheelchair.

4. Intercom Systems

Not just limited to fancy apartments. If it takes you or a family member time to get to the door, installing a doorbell that pops up on your phone or your iPad can be really helpful to stop you rushing to the front door and potentially tripping or hurting yourself on the way! A door-entry system like this can also help you see who’s at the door and whether you even need to get up and answer the door. Similar to this, a key safe could be a good idea for people to let themselves in that you trust.

There are four things that you could do or could need to do now or in the future with some handy technological ideas for the inside and outside of your favourite place…
