5 Ways To Make Fruit & Veg Last Longer

One of the most annoying things about eating healthy is the tendency for our fave fresh fruit and veg to ripen and go off to quickly. This is the worst thing! I mean, the period from when an avocado is good to eat and when it’s off is literally about 15 minutes, isn’t it? Here are three tips to help keep your fruit and veg fresher for longer!

1. Keep ‘Em Apart!

Some vegetables and fruits like avocados, bananas, kiwis, mangoes and tomatoes produce a gas called ethylene as they ripen and this can ripen other foods that are sensitive to it too early such as apples, broccoli, carrots and watermelon! Keep these guys apart and your fruit and veg with definitely last longer.

2. Buy Quality
As much as I love cheaper stores like Lidl & Aldi I do find quite often that their fruit and veg, and especially salad, go off within a few days whereas when I’ve picked up berries or peppers from Sainsbury’s or Tesco on a whim, they have definitely lasted a lot longer. I also love to buy locally sourced fruit and veg when I can afford it. I get my fruit and veg deliveries locally from Kerry’s Fresh and the produce always seems to last longer than the cheaper supermarkets.

3. Only Buy What You Need

Wastage is one of the biggest problems when it comes to food going off so the best way to combat this is to only buy what you need. How do you know what you’ll need? Meal planning! Even if you just have an idea of which veg you’ll use in which meal this will prevent you from buying too much and therefore wasting it because you’re not using it quick enough!
