The party season is the perfect time for a red lip. Now, I love red lipstick all year round but it’s especially fun and festive at Christmas time. Here are my three top tips for perfecting your pout.
1. Use a liner
If you find it tricky to keep your red lip neat, start off with a sharp lip liner in the same shade as your lipstick and trace the outline of your lips first – just make sure you’ve got a steady hand, your liner is sharp and you don’t over line your lips. Plus, if you want your lipstick to last longer, you can fill in your lips with your liner before you apply your lipstick too. Lipliner is less slippy than lipstick and therefore it’s easier to control the outline of the colour.
2. Find your formula
When it comes to a red lip, it’s striking so you need to be comfortable and confident wearing it. My perfect lipstick formula is a matte liquid lipstick because I find these the most comfortable to wear and the easiest to apply. I also like a crayon style chubby lipstick because they’re super easy to apply too. Find what you find easiest to wear and rock that.
I like a matte lipstick because they’re long lasting but they can sometimes be drying so bear this in mind. A shiny or glossy lipstick will move a lot more than a liquid matte so if you’re clumsy like me, steer clear!
3. Perfect shade
Choosing your red is really important. If you want a classic, pillar box red that it really long lasting then the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Santa Sangre is perfect. I prefer this colour when I have some darker shades in my hair as when I’m really blonde I find it looks a bit too ‘pin-up’ and not that modern but that’s just my personal preference. Kat Von D lipsticks really dry down and last ages but they can become uncomfortable if you’re wearing them all day.
I love a dark, berry red too and this colour will suit anyone. I love the Bobbi Brown Luxe Liquid Lip Velvet Matte in Your Majesty – this is such a comfortable lipstick and it’s still quite moisturising. Finally, a warm, orange toned red is also great for loads of skin tones as they’re warmer and won’t draw colour out of your complexion. The No 7 Matte Liquid Lips in Fearless is matte but it doesn’t dry so it’s so comfortable but it does transfer a lot of colour so requires a few top ups if you’re eating or drinking a lot. I do love the colour of this one though and it feels really nice on the lips.
What do you think, do you love a red lip?
