3 Modern Living Room Decor Ideas

As you probably know, I love a bit of interior design, Pinterest and shopping for homewares. You can check out our living room before and after if you fancy taking a nose around our home. I wanted to share three of my favourite styles for a little bit of interiors inspiration in case you’re decorating or looking for some style inspiration that isn’t ‘all grey everything’. As much as I love a grey haven it’s not the style I go for in my own home. Ours is a mix of these three styles as I like to take little bits of styles that I like and mix them all together.

1. Print-heavy eclectic

A.k.a Pinterest heaven. I love a print wall and a fancy frame and the great thing about this style is that things really don’t have to match at all. You can pair colours and prints and textures to your heart’s content! This is a great style to go with if you’re not about that minimalist life – if you actually have stuff like a normal person, the eclectic look is easy because you can store books and ornaments for style, not just for function.

To stop this look becoming overwhelming you do have to keep things fairly tidy otherwise it’ll end up looking more messy than stylishly busy.

Some fab pieces on the high street to help you get this eclectic and funky look are available from stores like H&M, IKEA and John Lewis as well as little shops like Tiger Copenhagen and Sostrene Grene if you’re based in Nottingham. I love the Julia Gash Nottingham Print which we actually already have in the Barcelona version – this is available in a Glasgow, Birmingham and Leeds, Bristol and Brighton to name but a few!

I also love the brightness of the London Transport Museum Penguin Print. With this trend, colour is so important so think yellow, pinks and blues with accents of green plants to really pop in your room. H&M have so many bargains that look really individual and cool for this trend, I like the H&M Lips Print Candle and their Yellow Velvet Cushion which is only £6.99. I have these in my living room in a rusty orange colour and they’re lovely quality. Make a statement with a bold floor covering if you have wooden-style laminate or floorboards, try the IKEA striped rug or the Insta-classic La Redoute printed rug like we have.

2. Industrial chic

Another Pinterest favourite is industrial styling which is that perfect New York loft style and looks so cool. This is a really masculine style and is great if you’re not into fluffy-ness and just like to keep things simple. Think metals, wood, simple plants, black and white and high ceilings.

Get this look with some serious statement pieces of furniture. Take the Zurleys Bronx TV unit and the MADE.com Lomond Shelving. The industrial look is all about long-lasting and investment pieces of furniture so it’s great if you like classic style and you want your buys to really stand the test of time. Zurleys is a great online store for this look and they’re always refreshing their stock with new products.

Accessorise with metals, metallic accents and simple plants. H&M is another great place to shop for this trend as it’s quite minimalist and Scandinavian in style. This H&M Metal Wire Basket is a cute little way to keep things tidy and continue the metal accents with a cool light fitting like this Zurleys Eastvale Pendant Light and replace standard dining chairs with items like the IKEA Swivel Chair for a serious style statement.

Add personality with prints such as this lovely Personalised Coordinates Print from Blim and Blum – this style doesn’t have to mean a box that doesn’t feel like a home, you can add things in your own way like these names and coordinates that really mean something to you and your family without having cringe-worthy ‘Live Laugh Love’ prints dotted around. No offence to anyone who has those but they’re just not my style. Finish things off with a bit of luxury with something like this Tom Dixon Gold Candle.

3. Mid-century love

Mad Men style, 60s and 70s mid-century furniture has always been interesting to me, I just love how the pieces look, how they’re made and the colours of the wood. This is a commitment to a certain style but you can make the 60s theme more modern with the addition of stylish, up to date pieces. Clean lines from wooden floors and smooth walls make this style look awesome and modern and the fabrics and style of cabinets can give you the Sixties edge.

This style is all about the big pieces of furniture too to really get the Mid-century style. I love this Zurleys Fiesta Coffee Table which is the classic retro shape and matte black is a really easy texture to work with. It’ll go amazingly next to the John Lewis Verona Rug which has a super vintage/retro pattern on it. This Swoon Zabel TV unit is so mid-century it’s unbelievable, I just love it. If you have a really wide living room it would look perfect!

Again, this trend is about colour as well so add pops with pinks like this incredible John Lewis Pink Armchair and yellow amongst rich blues and greens with black, wood and grey as the base tones. Metallic accents will finish everything off, I found these amazing Candlesticks by Cooee from the Scandinavian Design Centre and they’re just super cool and modern but still have a retro design edge.

What do you think? Which is your favourite style from these three? I love all of them so I encorporate little bits of each into my overall style of my house. You can check out my dining room here and my bedroom here too.
