Dubrovnik Food Diary

It’s definitely going to be true to say that we ate well during our trip to Dubrovnik. I wanted to share some of our favourites with you from easy lunches to incredible sushi and some harbour-side restaurants. There’s places to eat and drink across the whole price range but overall, Dubrovnik is quite an expensive city to eat out in. We had plenty of cost-effective lunches and snacks as we loved the evening vibe and wanted to spend more on our meals out for most of the evenings. Let’s get into it!

Sushi in Dubrovnik

I’m starting with my favourite place for dinner in Dubrovnik which was Oyster & Sushi Bar Bota. This place is incredible and we actually went here twice out of our five dinners out because it was so great. They do a range of hot dishes like spring rolls and teriyaki chicken as well as all your classic sushi pieces like Nigiri and all the rolls you could ask for. The fish is so fresh and beautiful and the hot dishes we tried were fantastic too. If you love sushi, you will really enjoy it here. The atmosphere is so romantic and intimate here too. We didn’t expect to have to book much on this holiday but we ended up booking almost every meal so I’d recommend getting in early to book for nights that you want specific meals on. Our meals here came to between £40 and £50 as we ate twice which is fairly reasonable with drinks too.

Restaurants in Dubrovnik

Another amazing restaurant which is just a street up from the main square is Fat Cats, we didn’t find anywhere else doing food like this on our whole trip and we loved it here. I had the Fat Cats burger with these amazing wedges and Luke had some bar buns and some crispy prawn balls which were ‘small plates’ on the menu but would easily do as a starter to share between two or as a small meal if you’re just peckish. We didn’t book here but we were lucky to grab a table I think. They have a great craft beer range here too as they’re paired with one of the bars mentioned further on in the post, Glam Cafe. Our meal here was also around £40 with drinks for both of us.

Our last night’s meal was incredible and a proper splurge as a send off. We had a bottle of wine, starters and a main each at Gradska kavana Arsenal Restaurant which looks over the harbour and is beautiful. The pasta dish on the photo above is called Sea and Mountains and was a delicious seafood creamy tomato pasta and was a starter. We had steaks and veal for mains and they were really fantastic. The service was also lovely here and the setting is amazing so I’d definitely recommend for a special occasion! Our meal was around £80 here with a bottle of local wine and two courses each.

Another Harbourside restaurant which has a lovely terrace is Poklisar – you’ll see this as you walk through the old town to the ferry for Lokrum as it has striped seats that can’t be missed. The food here was really great and we loved the service. I had an amazing seafood pizza and Luke has steak and chips and we were both really impressed. This meal was around £70 with three drinks and two starters and an expensive steak.

Coffee in Dubrovnik

Most of the coffee in Dubrovnik is pretty good, they do a good cappuccino, espresso and latte like you’d get in coffee shops and cafes at home but if you’re after cold brew, iced lattes and something a little more about the roast of the coffee then Cogito is a coffee-lovers dream. About £7-8 for two coffees and your iced coffee will come in a cup you’d usually have a hot one in but cute non the less.

Pizza in Dubrovnik

Anywhere. Seriously you will get great pizza pretty much anywhere. We picked a random first lunch spot when we first arrived as we were starving and it was incredible. I also had another pizza at a different restaurant and it was amazing too so they do pizza pretty well! They even serve it by the slice if you hunt out Tuttobene which is like a kebab/fries/pizza place that I’m mentioning next in cheap eats…

Cheap Eats in Dubrovnik

If, like us, you love a fancy dinner out in the evening but want to keep things light and cheap in the day time then take yourself to the nearest Tommy supermarket. These guys are great, just like a Lidl or an Aldi and most of them have amazing bakeries that sell huge sandwiches and wraps (that can last you two days – seriously!) for about £2-4 per item, grab a share bag of crisps and some drinks from the chillers here and you’ve got an affordable lunch. You could easily spend the same as a dinner on lunch in Dubrovnik as it is quite pricey so we tended to grab lunch from Tommy to eat on our balcony on pool days or to take out and about with us on exploring days.

A cheap and easy dinner option is Tuttobene (I didn’t take a photo of the amazing wrap I had and I’m sorry forever but trust me). For about £8 you can get a street food-esque chicken kebab wrap with tonnes of salad and feta cheese and you won’t need to eat for a week they are so big! I’m not sure how much the pizza slices were or the fries but they also looked delicious if you’re craving some easy fast food.

If you need something sweet then of course there’s tonnes of ice cream parlours where a scoop (pretty massive scoop at that) is 14 kuna which is about £1.70 or investigate Captain Candy which is, as you would expect pick n mix to be, pricey! But, some of the sweets they have are so fun and I just love pick n mix!

Bars in Dubrovnik

Just like coffee, and pizza, you won’t be short of a good bar in Dubrovnik but they will differ in price. Bars nearest the main square are more expensive than the bars as you go up the streets at the sides of the Old Town. Just do a little exploring and you’ll find the ones you like. One of our favourites was Glam Cafe which was fab for craft beer and a really good value Aperol Spritz, I think it was about 48 kuna (£6) and I’d had them for 98 kuna too in the same trip which is obviously double.

We also loved D’vino for wine. There’s some amazing white and rose wine in Dubrovnik and all the rose is lovely and pale which I like! D’vino is also owned by the same people as Glam Cafe (it’s opposite it!) and just down from Fat Cats where I had that amazing burger so stick with these guys and you’ll be sorted.

And, breathe! That’s loads of the places that we personally found and loved in Dubrovnik – let me know if you’re going to Croatia and if you try any of these recommendations.
