Some people are born with the ability to put a fantastic looking outfit together. People like stylists do it effortlessly, and people who weren’t born with natural style can get a little jealous of this! Styling skills are definitely something that you can learn, I spent a few months training as a stylist with a little colour consulting and it was so interesting. It’s definitely something you can learn! Remember these few points, and you’ll be well on your way to constructing the perfect outfit every time!
The occasion will make a big difference to what sort of outfit you can wear. Wearing jeans and a t-shirt to a wedding probably won’t go down all that well, but wearing it shopping is more than OK. You need to make sure your clothing is occasion appropriate! If you think you’ll be uncomfortable in what you’re wearing at an event then you probably shouldn’t wear it.
The weather will also determine your outfit choices. Obviously, don’t wear a coat if it’s hot etc, you know this. I don’t need to tell you this. Simple!
Lots of fashionistas say that they like to pick their accessories first and then build around those. The accessories can make an outfit, especially if they’re great quality or really statement pieces. Pick your bag and shoes and then decide how you’ll go from there. You might choose some jewellery or a funky pair of glasses from an online opticians too. In some cases you might even find it easier to construct an outfit this way!
Your outfit needs to be balanced in order for it to look as good as possible. A balanced outfit won’t be too tight or too baggy ideally, and it’ll suit your shape. So, this means you need to know your body shape and the clothing styles that suit it. When you know that, you can put outfits together that you look great in! If you’re wearing loose trousers, wear a tighter top and vice versa. A balanced outfit is key to looking polished and put together.
I love showing off my personality in the clothes I choose to wear. I mean, how else are we supposed to do it?! Let people know your favourite colours, patterns, and styles in the things that you wear.
Things NEED to fit, and I mean really fit. If you have to stand in a certain way for it to look right or you’re saying ‘oh I’ll just get a belt’ and you think it’ll fit. No, don’t buy it and no, don’t wear it.
The most important thing is that you’re comfortable in the outfit you choose to wear. If you’re not comfortable, it won’t look right.
Ready to start putting outfits together? There are no real rules either, these are just tips! Remember, we all need to make a fashion faux pas or two to learn what works, so don’t be afraid. Trust me, I made a LOT of fashion nightmares before I found my style.
