A Trip Across Art: The South of France

The South of France has been the inspiration for art from Picasso to Matisse and for some of the most iconic films of all time. Along the French Riviera, there are some incredible art museums and the journey in between each one is one of the most beautiful drives you will ever take. To explore these villages which inspired some of the great artists, rent a car at a luxury car rental in Nice through sites such as PrimeRent for example and start your unforgettable journey along the coast. Here is an example of a great itinerary for Southern France.

Let’s begin in Nice with the Musee Matisse which has some of the great works created by the avant-garde artist Henry Matisse. The museum is located in a house that the artist spent time in and you can see how he lived as well as many of his beautiful paintings and sculptures. Also in Nice, in the same neighborhood of Cimiez, is the Musee National Marc Chagall. Here you can see some of the modernists works by the great Jewish artist with the backdrop of amazing parks to stroll through and to see the natural inspiration for both famous artists.


Next, you could take a beautiful drive to Saint Paul de Vence to see the Maeght Foundation and then head to the village of Biot. Here Fernand Leger spent time and frequently visited, earning him a beautiful museum in his name. You can see the beautiful mosaics and sculptures by the artist and also how he worked to create the pieces. From Biot, travel to Mougins to the Musee de la Photographie which houses a collection of photographs of Pablo Picasso and his life. Then be sure to stop at the Musee National Picasso, a gorgeous chapel decorated by the world renowned artist.
