As you may know, I’m really into interior design and love to discover new materials and ways of doing things that traditionally, might be seen as a bit off the wall. I really enjoy watching programmes like Grand Designs and George Clarke’s Ugly House To Lovely House and dream of doing our house up in a crazy way like these. I’ve been doing some serious Pinteresting over on my Interior Design & Decor board and I’ve discovered three materials I’d love to incorporate into our house one day.
1. Wood
Now wood might seem like a traditional material but when used in an alternative way such as this funky light fitting it can seem totally space age. By putting a traditional material in a non-traditional place you can really turn heads and make your style stand out.

2. Plastic
Plastic and acrylic can look super modern and cool when used in a residential setting. You can easily get this look at home with a little skill and patience. You could create a feature wall made out of geometric shapes, circles of plastic or you could even be really adventurous and design some sort of art if you’re the crafty way inclined. I absolutely love the palm tree below, it’s so tropical!

3. Glass
Glass is a really cool material that makes anything look fresh, clean and modern. I love this idea of a glass bannister mixed with the wooden stairs and pops of white against the dark walls. It looks like it should be in a really chic hotel in the middle of Miami!

What do you think about using alternative materials like these inside normal family homes? I think it gives them a little something extra and I think it’s really exciting. One of my favourite things is when glass and wood are combined together or glass and plastic are mixed in pieces of furniture, the end result is always super modern and cool.
